Deciding on the perfect home care provider for yourself or a loved one is an important decision. Azalea Home Care wants to help you make that all important decision and have put together a list of the most important questions to ask your prospective provider during the deliberation process: 

1.Does the agency hire certified CNA’s (Certified nursing assistants)

CNA’s need to earn a certificate or diploma in a CNA program with training in patient personal care, infection prevention, vital signs, communication, mental health, and other basic care. Each state may have different requirements for becoming a CNA, so it is important to find out what your particular state’s requirements are to be sure.

2. What is your hiring process? Are your employees screened? 

The hiring process of a homecare company reflects a lot on the standard of the caregivers. Employers should be carrying out competency based evaluations to test knowledge and skill set before making hiring decisions.

3.How do you find/source your caregivers ?

Agencies should work to source the best quality nurses and staff. Networking with nursing academies and nursing schools are a great way to source staff. 

4.Do you offer flexible visits?

It’s important to understand whether you will need the carer to visit at set weekly times, or if you can amend the times of the carer’s visits to suit your schedule.

You should also ask what kind of notice you have to give to cancel visits and what happens if your loved one is admitted into the hospital. Knowing this will save on paying for visits that your loved one does not need.

5.Will we have a dedicated caregiver?

Continuity of care often impacts customer satisfaction since a dedicated carer (or small team of carers) minimises the number of new people entering your loved one’s house. You should also  find out from any potential agency what plans they have in place in case the main carer/carers fall ill. The goal of any reputable agency is to provide the least amount of moving parts to this process as possible. 

6.What are the costs associated with the service offered? 

It is good to know all the expenses you will have upfront so you can plan accordingly. You will want to know if there are any set up fees, on-going management fees, etc. 

7. Do you provide a dedicated point of contact for your clients?

In the case of an emergency or simply when you need to update or contact your carer, it is important to know exactly who to contact and how to reach them. 

8.Do you offer inservice training or have a continued education program for your caregivers ? 

It’s important to look out for agencies who are invested in providing the best possible care to their patients at all times. By providing continued inservice training or education programmes, the caregivers and nurses will always be learning and improving. 

9. Are you willing to provide references for your agency? Are you an accredited company?

Asking the potential home care provider to present any references or accreditations they made can help to ensure the agency you go with has a good standing and reputation. 

10. Do you offer assistance in applying for the state waiver programmes?

State waiver programmes can have forms and application processes that are  complicated and difficult so it is really useful to have help and assistance with the application.
